What I Do
The main rule I follow is, keep it as natural as possible. If it has to be processed to be eaten by humans then it's probably not real food. I switched all grains like rice, bread, etc for an abundance of vegetables. Meat I still eat but I choose not to fry if I can help it. Fruits and walnuts are my snacks. For my cheating snacks I look for things with as little sugar as possible or I'll just have a very small serving just to help satisfy my cravings. Liquid wise I only drink water and green tea, nothing else. No dairy. I'm not going to get into the science of things too much on this site cause it's way too much info so if you're left in curiosity just Google it and there's tons of info that can explain things way better than I can. Just remember, fruits and vegetables are key and need to be eaten in abundance everyday.
Breakfast
I'll have a banana and 2 or 3 hardboiled eggs and sometimes I'll mix an avocado or some sliced meat with my eggs. Don't believe the decades old myth that more than 4 eggs a week will give you high cholesterol. I choose this as my breakfast cause it's fast and I don't have a lot of time before work.
Lunch, Dinner, Dinner #2
My lunch and dinner are pretty much the same idea. A bowl full of vegetables and 100 to 200 grams of meat. Basically it's a salad but the image of what a salad is to most of us is usually with lettuce which is not very filling. I usually have about 300 grams of vegetables each meal which consists of an assortment of broccoli, some kind of leafy chinese vegetable, quarter of a bell pepper, sliced mushrooms and butternut squash when I'm not too lazy to cut it. Eat as much vegetables as you want and any kind, there's no guilt at all. It just feels kind of odd at first cause we're all so used to eating vegetables as a side. Just picture your usual bowl or plate of a healthy helping of rice or pasta and switch that with vegetables. I like to lightly steam my vegetables cause it retains the most nutrients. When I say lightly steam I mean 2-3 minutes but for squash or carrots I'll go 5-7 minutes. I don't usually buy any organic vegetables but organic is probably better for you so if you want to by all means. If you're going to pick and choose which ones you're going to buy organic choose the ones that retain the most pesticides like leafy greens and bell peppers. You can find a comprehensive list searching Google.
For my meats I try to buy organic or non-medicated (no hormones or antibiotics) but I don't always cause it's more expensive and not every market sells them. I eat all meats, red, white just not green. By the way I saw an episode of CBC Marketplace where they found antibiotic resistant bacteria in organically raised chicken. They sort of concluded that it was due to the fact that the chickens they raised came from eggs that were injected with antibiotics. I still favour the organic and non-medicated cause they're raised more humanely and have nothing pumped into them but who really knows. I like to eat a lot of wild sockeye salmon when it's in season but there are other fish that are just a good for you. It's packed with the omega-3 stuff we apparently don't get enough of. If I don't have enough meat for my liking I'll throw in a couple hardboiled eggs. Baking is my method of cooking for my meats cause I believe it's got to be more healthy than frying. When you fry you need oil and the high temperature of frying can possibly change the chemistry of even good oils to make them unhealthy. Frying has got to be worse for you cause it tastes better? It's debatable but I think baking is more natural. If you want to be oil on top of any of your food the best would be extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Just make sure you get a reputable one.
Snacks
I snack between each meal and after. I'd say 3 snacks a day and it's always fruit with or without walnuts. By nature we're attracted to sweets and fruit is the only natural sweet food for us. I usually eat 2-3 apples and 2-3 bananas a day but you can choose which ever fruits you like. I like these ones cause they're really convenient. I only eat raw walnuts which you can buy in the bulk at most markets. Why walnuts? It's one of the only nuts that are high in omege 3's and low in omega 6's and that can be eaten in it's natural state. The thing about fruit is that you have to eat the whole fruit to get the complete benefits. Peeling the skin or juicing it will leave you with less fibre and other goodies that will leave you with basically sugar juice which will spike you're insulin. Nature works in mysterious ways. It's just like vitamin supplements. Your body can't absorb them very well cause it's not natural. Buying organic gets expensive so I'll only buy organic fruit known to retain a lot of pesticides like apples. If you're rich or want to be a 100% organic go ahead and go all out.
If I want to sin a little bit I opt for dark chocolate in the form of 85%. You can choose a bit higher or lower but I choose the highest percentage cocoa I can without having it taste like something else that's also brown. The higher the cocoa the lower the sugar. From a 100 gram package you get 8-10 squares and 4 squares will usually be about 6 grams of sugar. To give you an idea how little that is a can of coke has 41 grams so it's like a 7th of a can. A big sip? Also, high percentage dark chocolate has a decent amount of fibre which slows the sugar realeased to your bloodstream. Something else I do is I buy the healthiest ice cream I can which can only be so healthy and I just take a couple spoonfuls and put it back in the freezer. You'll be surprised after a few minutes how your sugar craving is satisfied. When I say healthy ice cream I mean the ones with less sugar or dairy free or organic.
Advice
Do I eat like this day in and day out, month after month? No way Jose. There's too much sin out there for me to resist. I probably have 2 or 3 cheat meals a week on average but I'm conscience of my cheat meals. I try to pick foods with the least carbohydrates, sugar, bad oils and no deep frying. For example, I'll just have the hamburger and leave out the fries and soda. I'll just eat a bigger hamburger. The way I see it I'm eating more of the good now and less of the bad where as before it was the opposite. I have no reason to be 100% strict. I'm not a professional athlete or someone who's existence depends on it. If you want to go out with your friends for dinner you can think about eating at home first and just have a beer or 2 and snack so you don't overindulge.
To warn you this kind of lifestyle involves the opposite of the lifestyle of western living. You have to cook a lot and you'll be going to the supermarket every other day. You'll be bringing your lunch to work and it's a must. My whole life I could never find the motivation to make my lunch the night before or the day of but when I decided I was going to make this change it wasn't that hard to do. I didn't have the motivation cause I didn't care so if you really do care you won't mind. I haven't bought a single lunch for months now. It's good to at least make a few servings of meat so you know you'll have something when you get home from work otherwise you might find it too much of a drag to cook and you'll just end up eating out. Vegetables you don't really have to prepare servings ahead of time cause they're fast to do. You'll be hungry faster cause the starches you used to eat won't be there to fill you for hours so remember you're going to need to snack between your meals. Real food is easy on the body and digests fast.
Final Thoughts
Another Warning. Your social life will take a dip. Your friends will not respect you anymore but screw them. They're only telling you that you're off your rocker cause they want to be in denial so they can continue eating the way they do and feel better about themselves. If you've decided to do this you've taken the step the majority of them never will and if you stick with it you're even better. Do this and you'll be part of the small percentage of people who won't end up looking all decrepit from a lifetime of putting garbage in their body. There's no difference between drugs and the food that the developed western society eats on a daily basis. They're inventions just like drugs made to give you instant gratification that lead to eventual side effects and trust me you're addicted. You think this food is natural and normal cause it's been around since you can remember and long before that too. You have to ask yourself how can something taste good, be inexpensive, convenient, filling and good for you? There's always a catch and the catch is that's it's not good for you. If you've read this much already and haven't killed yourself you must be wanting to make the change so just do it. You'll look better and feel better in some way and you won't want to go back to your old ways. All I ever hear from people I know is, "I can't eat like that it's crazy." You know what, I said the same exact thing but I'm here to tell you that you will get used to it and it will just seem normal. I ate everything, boozed it up every weekend and put other things in my body that I will not confess to here but here I am now. Like I said you don't have to be 100% strict and you don't have to jump in head first. You can ease into this way of eating 1 meal at a time.
